HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE MAFIA ISLAND MARINE PARK: The idea of establishing a marine park at Mafia Island began in the s when recommendations were made for the protection of coastal areas and marine resources in Tanzania through the establishment of marine parks.

Mafia Island marine Park (MIMP) consists of eight small reserves along the Tanzanian coast under the Fisheries (Marine Reserves) Regulations oftwo of these are in what is now the Mafia Island marine Park (MIMP), namely Chole Bay and Kitutia Reef. The marine park area at Mafia Island extends across some km2.

The Marine Parks and Reserves Unit was established under the Marine Parks and Reserves (MPRU) Act 29 of The MPRU is Managed by the Board of Trustees whose role among other things is to oversee management of marine parks and reserves operating under auspice of MPRU, formulating policies on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and related facilities, and advise the responsible Minister.

Marine Conservation in Zanzibar. In light of the above challenges, establishing community-based marine conservation programs is a daunting, but important, undertaking.

A number of these kinds of programs have been established in Tanzania over the past decade, four of which are located in the islands of Zanzibar. In Zanzibar, the only national park is Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park; there are also forest reserves, namely Ngezi Forest Reserve, Kiwengwa/Pongwe Forest Reserve, Kidike Root Site and Zala Park.

Zanzibar's marine fauna reflects the rich marine diversity of East Africa. Inthe Mafia Island Marine Park was formed to protect the archipelago's reefs. Within Chole Bay, the shallow reefs are perfect for snorkelling or learning to dive. Outside the bay, its entrance is guarded by a long coral wall, attracting more experienced divers.
